Chronic asthma is a type of inflammatory disease. The inflammation will lead towards the narrowing of airways that can cause breathless, wheezing, and the need to gasp for air.

Studies shown that this form of difficulty when it comes to breathing has two stages: first, the hyper-active response and second is the inflammatory response. Hyper-active response is manifested when there is constriction within the airways which is in response to inhaled irritants. The inflammatory response involves with the productions of cells (white blood) in the airways.

What usually happens during an attack is that the muscle tissue found around the walls of the bronchi will experience spasms that will cause difficulty in breathing. Eventually, this can lead to shortness of breath, coughing and a wheezing sound that will happen almost everyday.

There are some medical experts said that the symptoms of this type of asthma attack indicates that is caused by food allergy. This results to some doctors giving encouragement to patients to change their diets in order to lower down the incidence of the occurrence of symptoms.

Up until now the debate has been going on within the medical field whether chronic asthma should be classified as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Since not everyone who suffer from COPD will suffer from chronic asthma. But there are many individuals who suffer from chronic bronchitis do have asthma like symptoms.

Chronic asthma is a serious health disease and should be dealt with seriously. It is best to have a personal doctor who will take care of the patient every now and then. Regular visits to the doctor will be advisable in order to get proper medications for chronic asthma.

If a person has been diagnosed with chronic asthma, medical experts strongly suggest banning cigarette smoking from the house. Patients are also banned to use any volatile chemical that might trigger symptoms to occur. Avoiding and stop playing with the household pets such as dogs and cats can also lessen the problem.

To have basic knowledge about chronic asthma can help the patient and the immediate family to fully understand on what to do when attacks to occur and to come up with a strategic plan. In this way, asthma attacks can be less prevented and symptoms will not lead to life-threatening conditions.

Chronic asthma patients should make it a point to let the people around them especially their immediate family to know their condition. People like family members, friends, work mates, colleagues and even school mates (for kids and teenagers) should have knowledge about the health condition that they are in and also they will be properly educated on what to do when an attack strikes. In this way, it will be much easier to manage the condition.

It is very important that those who suffer from chronic asthma should bring along their medications such as inhalers. At least, when there is an asthma attack it will be detected before it starts to become serious and chronic causing a lot of complications at the end.
